FYC TOUR 2024

Message from Senior Leaders - Evie, Freya, Jess & Lily

Whether it’s your first time on tour with FYC or not, this is going to be such an exciting trip. Tour is always so much fun but it’s also going to be busy and hard work, so we thought we should share some of our wisdom.

What to expect from a competition…

Hard work - we will be rehearsing as much as we can but we don’t always have much time to fit in a long rehearsal, so you need to be prepared to work hard whenever we get the opportunity (even if it is in a random hallway or departures at Heathrow!).

You will be tired - as we will be working hard to be able to perform at our best in the competition, everyone is going to be tired and emotional (including the adults!) so remember to be respectful of others who aren’t feeling 100% and get as much sleep as you can. At some point on tour everyone will feel exhausted, but you have to push through and try as hard as you can to give everything you have to every performance in order to win some medals!

Top tips:

  1. Whilst going on (two!) long haul flights and having the little TV in your headrest on the way to New Zealand is very exciting, you need to ensure you do everything to get over jet lag as soon as possible! From our experience drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine, using an eyemask/ear plugs to sleep and following the environment of the plane cabin (i.e if the lights are off then its time to get some sleep so you are waking up for the right time of day) makes a real difference when travelling to a destination 12 hours ahead.

  2. Sleep when you can and where you can (in the past some of the more random locations have been: a beach, the pavement and a lunch table - but choose wisely!). You might not be tired at the start of tour, but you will be grateful later if you save your energy. Definitely don’t stay up late into the evenings, get to bed asap. This also applies if we have an evening competition and have designated downtime - it’s happening for a reason!

  3. Look after your voice - if you don’t need to sing then don’t because it is a long week of singing and we all want to be performing at our best! Try to have hot drinks when you can and make sure you’re not shouting on coach journeys or when in your rooms. Your water bottle should always be full when leaving the hotel/restaurants.

  4. Keep Organised - make sure you know what is in your suitcase and where it is. Don’t mess up ironed clothes in your case, especially your uniform! Listen to the adults and senior leaders as to how you need to hang and carry your uniform sensibly when we get to our hotel.

  5. Don’t worry! It’s completely normal to get nervous about travelling and performing, having been in the senior choir for 7 years we have learned how to control our nerves, but everyone is different so make sure you’re understanding of others (especially our younger members who are less experienced).

Adrenaline is the chemical that makes you feel nerves, but remember it is also what triggers excitement. If you find yourself feeling nervous try to remember this and shift your nerves to excitement. Another way of dealing with nerves, especially travel worries, is to distract yourself - make sure you bring a book/headphones/card game to keep yourself occupied.

Don’t forget to enjoy yourself too! It’s an incredible experience that you will remember for the rest of your life, with some of your best friends!

If you’re worried about anything you can always talk to any of the adults, or a senior leader - we are always more than happy to help and make sure you have the best time!

Freya, Evie, Lily and Jess x
